Primary Bedroom Makeover

Have you ever reached a point where a space just no longer feels right? That’s exactly what happened to me with my primary bedroom. Despite doing mini refreshes over the years, it still didn’t align with what I envisioned for my sanctuary.

Recently, I decided it was time to make a real change. I began by assessing what aspects of the room were lacking and what elements I wanted to incorporate. I focused on creating a calming atmosphere by selecting a soothing color palette and incorporating soft textures through bedding and curtains.

Next, I re-evaluated the furniture layout, ensuring that each piece served a purpose while maximizing space. I opted for versatile furniture that offered both style and functionality. This included two vintage beside nightstands with storage and a plush accent chair that doubled as a reading nook.

Lighting also played a crucial role in the transformation. I replaced my hanging beside lights with softer lamps for a cozy ambiance. Lastly, personal touches such as artwork and decorative items contributed to making the space uniquely mine.

With these thoughtful changes, my primary bedroom finally reflects my taste and serves as the tranquil retreat I always wanted. It’s amazing how a well-planned makeover can breathe new life into a space, making it not just a room but a comforting haven.

Before we go on, let’s take a look down memory lane.

When we moved into this home, it was a bland beige and decidedly boring. After enduring the dullness for an extended period, I finally decided to take action and paint one wall in Sherwin Williams Tri-Corn Black. The stark contrast of the black paint brought a bold statement to the entire space, dramatically transforming the atmosphere in a way that was both exciting and refreshing. This choice not only enhanced the visual appeal but also added a modern touch to our living environment.

I initially had a black accent wall paired with beige walls, but it didn’t satisfy my vision for the room. To create a more cohesive and brighter atmosphere, I opted to paint the remaining walls white. To add depth and contrast, I painted the tray ceiling black, which made the space feel more dynamic.

Along with the wall updates, I refreshed the bedding for a more modern look. To add a unique touch, I painted one of the nightstands and repurposed a bar cart as the second nightstand, which not only provided additional storage but also enhanced the overall aesthetic.

The flooring also underwent a significant transformation. After pulling up the old carpet, I replaced it with hardwood floors, contributing to a clean, contemporary feel. These changes combined to create a more balanced and inviting environment.

Eventually, it was time to completely make over the room like I really wanted. I chose to incorporate Chasing Paper x David Quarles Ruth's Garden wallpaper for the accent wall. The vibrant colors and intricate patterns brought a sense of life and cheer to the space. It was simply perfect, and I couldn't be happier with my selection.

To complement the accent wall, I opted for calming neutral tones for the remaining walls and to add additional colors to the tray ceiling, creating a balanced atmosphere. Soft lighting fixtures would enhance the garden theme, casting gentle shadows that mimic the play of light through real foliage.

Furnishings were chosen carefully, with a focus on comfort and style. A plush, upholstered bed frame became the focal point, adorned with throw pillows in colors reminiscent of the garden. I added natural wood elements through my 1970s Lane Brutalist Staccato nightstands in Walnut and dresser in Pecan, connecting the indoor space to the essence of nature outside.

With these choices, I envisioned this was going to be the bedroom that I wanted—a serene retreat that blends beauty with comfort, inviting me to unwind and relax in its embrace each day.

The image showcases a harmonious blend of colors on the walls and the tray ceiling. The walls are painted a cream that creates a calm and inviting atmosphere. In contrast, the tray ceiling features a rich navy blue that adds depth and sophistication to the room. Accentuating the overall design is an beige trim that elegantly outlines both the walls and the ceiling, bringing a sense of brightness and balance to the space. This combination of colors enhances the room's aesthetic, making it both stylish and serene.

I introduced a luxurious Lulu and Georgia area rug to anchor the space, bringing in warmth and texture. The seating area now invites relaxation, with a comfortable chair and a stylish stool that complement the rug beautifully. The centerpiece of the room is a stunning Lulu and Georgia x Sarah Sherman Samuel Merrit dresser, which adds functionality and elegance.

To enhance the artistic ambiance, I incorporated artwork from some of my favorite artists. Each piece tells a story, contributing to a creative environment that inspires me daily. This combination transforms the area into an inviting artist retreat, where creativity can flourish amidst thoughtfully curated decor.

I chose a custom mounted floating credenza which offers a modern aesthetic while maintaining an open floor plan. The custom design allows for adequate space beneath, creating a sense of airiness and enabling the display of larger artwork. The elevated surface provides an ideal platform for showcasing sculptures and smaller pieces, ensuring that each item stands out without the visual clutter that traditional furniture can sometimes create.

Incorporating a floating credenza also enhanced the overall flow of the room. With the floor unobstructed, the eye is naturally drawn toward the displayed artwork, making it a focal point. Moreover, this design choice allows for versatility in arranging and rearranging my collection, accommodating changing tastes or seasonal themes.

Consider the lighting in my space as well; installing the credenza at a height that catches natural light enhanced the beauty of the displayed items, while strategic artificial lighting highlight individual pieces effectively. Overall, the decision to go with a floating credenza is a creative way to blend functionality with artistic expression.

The new CB2 Forte Channeled Green Velvet bed adds a refreshing focal point to the room, harmonizing beautifully with the existing decor. The addition of plush throw pillows introduces a layer of comfort and style, enhancing the overall aesthetic. To maintain balance and not compete with the intricate wallpaper, the bedding has been kept simple, featuring cream linen sheets and a duvet that subtly complements one of the wall colors. This careful selection creates a serene atmosphere, allowing the bed to shine while ensuring the design remains cohesive and inviting.

Overall, my room is now the space that I envisioned it could be. The walls are painted in a soothing color that promotes relaxation, and the soft lighting creates a warm atmosphere. Every element, from the carefully chosen decor to the arrangement of furniture, contributes to a sense of calm and comfort.

I love coming home and curling up in bed to decompress from the day or to read. The stack of books on my nightstand beckons me, offering a retreat into different worlds. My cozy blankets invite me to settle in for hours of enjoyment, while the gentle hum of the outside world fades away. This space has transformed into a personal sanctuary, a place where I can unwind, reflect, and rejuvenate my spirit.
