Kitchen Refresh Makeover

You’ve waited patiently for this kitchen reveal, and I’m so excited to finally be able to share it with you. We have lived in this house for many years, and I was never in love with the kitchen. Although, the kitchen is part of the open concept plan, it never felt quite right.

Kitchens are typically the heart of the home, and I can say that is true for my space. I wanted this space to feel warm and inviting. I wanted it to be missed when I left and greet me upon arrival. I was able to achieve just that with the items that I chose for this space.

Before we jump into all of this goodness, let’s take a trip down memory lane.

Although the kitchen is a nice size with ample countertop space, it was still lacking something. I decided to bring in a marble kitchen island so the space wouldn’t feel so empty and open. I instantly loved the addition, but it still wasn’t there yet.

Changing out the overhead lighting definitely helped to bring the space into better alignment, but there was still just to much paleness going on. Everything from the cabinets, countertops, and floors just merged into each other. There was nothing that stood out.

I couldn’t take everything being the same color any longer, so I had the cabinets painted Sherwin Williams Snowbound. and I updated the hardware. This made all the difference in the world. Paint is definitely a game changer. Once the cabinets were painted, I knew what my next steps needed to be which was fairly simple. The sink, faucet, backsplash, and countertops had to go.

I wasn’t quite sure in the beginning what type of countertops that I wanted, so I just continued to draw inspiration using my pinterest boards to pin everything that evoked a feeling for me. One day I was over my friend Carmeon Hamilton’s house, and she had just recently updated her kitchen with these these beautiful Walnut butcher block countertops. I was instantly in love, and it just hit home the direction that I needed to go.

With the white cabinets, marble kitchen island, the warmth of the butcher block countertops was exactly what our kitchen was missing. I wanted this space to be an area where we could hang out, cook, and talk over a glass of wine. I wanted it to connect the other two spaces in a way that it didn’t before. There was always something missing, but now, it is EVERYTHING that I didn’t know I needed.

Changing out the light fixtures, adding an island, painting the cabinets, and replacing the hardware were pretty simple tasks to accomplish. However, replacing a faucet, sink, backsplash, and countertops wasn’t going to be as easy of a job for us to handle. I had the vision, but I wasn’t going to be able to tackle this job alone. Therefore, we hired GoHandymanPro to execute my plan.

First thing to go was those hideous laminate brown and gray countertops. As stated before, I decided to go with the Walnut Butcher Block countertops from Lumber Liquidators. Due to the size of my kitchen, I needed two 12 feet countertops and one 8 foot countertop. I squealed when the first laminate countertop was removed. Literally, the butcherblock countertops was perfect. I also decided to use the Mineral Oil for now since this is my first go at butcher block. I’m loving how it has turned out so far, but I will know more in a few more months. I really love the rich tone of the wood once the mineral oil soaked into the wood.

The Tile

After the countertops were removed, out came the old brown, orange, and gold backsplash. The old backsplash was replaced with the Blot Noon Porcelain Hexagon Wall & Floor tile gifted from The Tile Shop. I love that it isn’t completely white, but has character and movement to it with the grayish blot in the middle. It comes in three different colors which I debated on which one to choose. Although, any of them would have looked great, this one was the right one for this space with the other elements. The large scale hexagon tile marries perfectly with the richness of the wood and the white of the cabinets.

The Sink

After the tile was put in, this beautiful gifted Elkay black undermount single sink and gifted Elkay black single hole faucet were installed. It was a no brainer that I would go with a matte black sink since black is my favorite these days. I knew that I would choose a single sink because I’ve never had one before, and wanted this refresh to be very different from before. What I didn’t realize is that I selected the exact same sink and faucet as my friend Carmeon Hamilton had installed for her kitchen refresh. I absolutely love the depth of this sink and how easy it is to wash all my pots and pans. The richness of the black sink is a perfect combination paired with the richness of the butcher block countertops and white tile.

I had to have a faucet that had a sprayer on it. I previously had a sink with a sprayer, and they come in very handy. It has just the right amount of elasticity to stretch out to get all of the corners clean and when done, it snaps right back into place.

I have always wanted to replace the recess lights over the bar area. So when I spotted these two Mitzi Milo pendant lights, I knew they were the ones. I wanted them slightly oversized, so I ordered them in size 14”. They have all the elements of the entire space, warm, black, and brass. They are simply divine.

There is literally no space in my home without artwork. These two large black and white pieces titled Black on Both Sides and Me Against the World from artist Gee Horton was the icing on the cake in this space. It speaks to your soul as you enter into the kitchen which is the mood I wanted to evoke in this space.

After all elements were in place, I was able to style the space. I used the items that I previously had in the space with a few additions such as some new charcuterie boards, a spoon holder, glass containers, artwork, candles, and a teak bowl. I rearranged my countertop bar and how I display my bowls. Finally, I added a vintage rug to warm up the floor.

When I say that I am so in love with this space. There isn’t one element that I would change, not one. If I do anything else to this space in the years to come, it would be to change out my tile floor. I will be back with a full styling video soon!!
