Moody Movie Lounge

I got the assignment, and I understood it.

Whenever I have the great opportunity to step into someone’s home and re-design it for them, I take that as an honor and privilege. I make sure that I spend the time listening to them so that I can bring them a space that they truly love and are happy to live in.

During the consultation, I walk the room with my client and ask them a series of questions. The major questions are how will this room function and what is the mood you are trying to set.

When I meet with my client to makeover her bonus room, she had some specific requests. She wanted it dark, moody, and a place to curl up and watch a movie. She wanted a space to escape to after a long day of work. She also wanted to make sure she could entertain family and friends.

Armed with the information needed, I immediately jumped into action.

Before I break down the space, let’s get into where it all began.

I was excited to bring this blank canvas to life. My scope of work included the following:

Pick out a dark and moody paint color

Re-configure the book case

Update the lighting

Remove the carpet

When I initially walked through my clients space, it was obvious that the small opening for a television wasn’t going to work. In order to have the movie lounge that my client desperately wanted, we had to enlarge the opening. I enlisted the help of Go Handy Man Pro to re-configure this built in to the function that we needed for this movie lounge. They enlarged the opening as well as re-configured some of the other openings. After they completed this task, in came Gomez, another handy man who added the wooden slats to the back to give the bookcase a little more character and texture.

Check out the beautiful after.

Moody Paint Color

In order to give the client the moodiness that she wanted, I decided to go dark with the wall and bookcase color. I knew I didn’t want to use black, so I introduced Sherwin Williams Urbane Bronze to my client. She was all on board because she too felt it would be perfect for the mood we were setting. In addition to the color giving the space a moody feel, I also knew this color would make the space feel like a lounge. Since kicking off shoes and getting comfortable was part of the plan, this color was perfect.

Floor

Another element that needed to be updated was removing the dated carpet for these beautiful hardwood floors. The hardwood floors added warmed and an earthy look to the room. Then, I layered this beautiful black and cream pattern rug to anchor all of the furniture.

I knew the space needed a sectional as well as chairs so there is enough seating when my client wants to entertain. I made sure that I styled the room with the elements that I use for every project. Each of my projects have texture, layers, and some type of pattern. I was able to achieve this with the chairs, throw, pillows, and rug.

The bookcase has many openings, therefore, I decided to shop my clients home to see what items that I could incorporate into the design. Additionally, I always want the homeowner to feel like this is really their space. A home should always be curated and not store bought. Lastly, I had to bring in some greenery. Even those this room doesn’t have any windows, none of my designs are complete without a plant or two.

My client now has a space that she can retreat to as well as entertain in.

Please let me know what you think of this moody movie lounge. My client is in love and so am I.
