One Room Challenge: So it begins....

Hello friends!! So the One Room Challenge officially kicks off today for the guest participants. I have followed the One Room Challenge for years now, and I’m thrilled to be a guest participant this year. I have decided to tackle one room in my home that is the only room downstairs that hasn’t been touched. I can’t wait to get started, but let’s first talk about what ORC is and what is different about it this year.

The ORC is a platform that allows featured designers and guests participates to participate in designing and executing a room in a short amount of time. It takes place twice a year and is organized by Linda Weinstein of Calling It Home and a media partner to Better Homes and Gardens. In no way is ORC a competition, but rather a cheering squad. Everyone that participates in this challenge wraps their arms around each other to support one another’s vision for their spaces. This year’s ORC is a little different from the previous challenges. This year’s challenge has been extended for 8 weeks versus the normal 6 weeks. They decided to extend the time due to our current state of affairs, the infamous COVID-19 pandemic. ORC wanted to allow people to participate, but also wanted everyone to practice the pandemic guidelines of social distancing and the stay at home order. The stay at home order has been relaxed in some areas and they are phasing in more and more businesses’ reopening. So now is the perfect time to begin this challenge.

Every Thursday for the next 8 weeks, I will document my process here, so please bookmark this blog. I will share all the behind the scenes footage such as my design plan, painting, DIY projects, shopping, etc. The final reveal with take place the week of June 25th to July 1st with a full detail of every item in the space and some not before scene parts of the room design. Each week I will also link up with the Featured designers and guest participates so that you can cheer them on as well. You can find us all over on the One Room Challenge website. Please follow me on Instagram @quitatate for daily ORC design inspiration.

Before we discuss the room I’m designing, let me tell you a little about me. My name is Laquita (Quita for short), owner of Laquita Tate Interior Styling & Designs. I’m based in Memphis, TN with my husband and we have two grown children. I love all things home décor, design, and styling. I don’t like to say that I have a specific style because I love different elements of them all. I am especially drawn to modern boho, mid century modern, and cultural pieces. You will definitely find the color black and artwork throughout my home designs. I love a neutral palette, however, I love infusing it with color. On my blog, I share design and styling ideas, sharing how to use a space in your home, take you behind the scenes on my projects, share other spaces that I adore, and I throw in some lifestyle content.

Now that we got that out the way, let’s talk about the space that I will re-create. I chose to do my Master Bathroom because it is the only room on the bottom level that hasn’t been touched since we moved in many years ago and it definitely needs an upgrade. I have only purchased items to style the sink and new bathroom rugs. Other than that, the bathroom has been pretty boring. Well, here is my chance to do the complete opposite of boring and birth a new life into our bathroom space. I won’t do a renovation job, because the bones of the space is great. I will only be updating it aesthetically, but trust me it will be full of greatness.

The spa tub is a definite needed fixture in my bathroom, but there is nothing exciting about it.

Well as you can see I was right to choose this room to makeover. It is so long overdue and I am not sure what has kept me from tackling this space way before now. Anywho, please continue to come back my page each week so you can see the progress. It is going to be a good one. I will share my design plan next Thursday.

Thank you all for following along and please stay tuned for more.
