Painting Undesirable Tile
Have you ever just wanted to update something but you didn’t have the funds to completely rip things out? Well, I have and that’s exactly how I felt about my Primary Bathroom tile floors. They weren’t terrible but they had to be changed. They were in great condition, but there was something missing.
When I decided to do my Primary Bathroom for the ORC, I knew that something had to be done about the floors. I knew I couldn’t just take them completely out and install new ones. So I put on my thinking cap, and decided to just paint them. I have never painted tile before, so I set out to figure it out. I watched some videos and read some other content on how to best paint tile floors. Everyone’s suggestions were different.
Rust-oleum makes a tile floor paint, and I desperately wanted to use it. However, it wasn’t in stock anywhere and they didn’t know when it would be. I decided to take matters in my own hands, and do what I thought was best.
Let’s break down exactly what I did to achieve these black floors that I absolutely love. The first thing I did was to clean the floor. After sweeping the floor, I used the TSP cleaning solution. TSP is a degreaser, and I was hoping this solution would help the paint adhere to it better. After allowing the cleaner to dry, I went around and put painter’s tape around the baseboards and doors. I wanted to make sure that I didn’t get any black on my newly painted white walls.
After I put down the painter’s tape, I moved on to the next part. I primed the floors to give an extra layer for the paint to stick to the floor. I picked up Zinsser 123 Primer from my local Home Depot. I decided it would be best to use a paint brush and prime all of the grout lines first. After that dried, it was time to put the primer down on the actual tile floor.
After priming the entire space and allowing it to dry, I started painting the floor. I used Behr Marquee black that I picked up from Home Depot. I applied about 3 coats to get the black that I wanted. Of course I allowed it to dry in between each coat. I’m thrilled that I went ahead and painted the floors. It was no way I could have brown floors in my new beautiful bathroom.
The only con of painting the floors black is the amount of lint that comes off of the rug. Black shows everything, but you know what, I wouldn’t change the color for anything in the world.
Please share with me if you try this tile painting process.
